You should try using a widget manager it makes widget placement and themes much easier to work with. The best one I have found is Total Widget Control.

Hi,

switch to a different non-Thematic theme and back to your child theme. Go back to the widget section and there you should see the pre-set widgets.

I must be missing something about this fix.

I'm working with WP v. 2.9.2 and have searched my old version of Thematic and the version I downloaded today, 0.9.6.2, and cannot find the string $_GET in thematic/functions.php.

Activating the new Thematic theme did not fix the problem. Removing widgets then adding them back did not work. Resetting widgets did not work. If I remove all widgets, it does not default to pre-set widgets.

Any help?

@futureimperfect: I can replicate the problem as well actually (after installing it locally) and it seems this applies to quite a few others

The solution was surprisingly simple:

We should remove the ! from the condition which checks whether $_GET is set or not.

This is found in functions.php on Line 91.

A two step approach is given by here.

In the admin page it's showing that the default widgets are active, yet they don't appear when viewed in a browser. As a matter of fact, when I view the source I see no reference to the widgets, so I'm assuming it's not related to the CSS.

@futureimperfect: For some reason I thought this was a Thematic post. Apologies. Anyway, according to the tutorial, leaving the widgets out should default back to the pre-set widgets. Is that what you see with your setup as well?

Hey everyone,

I seem to be having some trouble getting widgets to appear using 'your-wordpress-theme' from the tutorial on themeshaper.com. Just to make sure that it wasn't something I modified that was causing it I downloaded a fresh copy of the project from Google Code, and am having the exact same issue. I'm using CSSEdit on the Mac and can see
#primary.widget-area
and
#secondary.widget-area
, but the widgets are nowhere to be found, (I do see, however, two bullet points which I'm sure are being generated by the ul tags). The widgets are active in the WordPress admin page, too. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any insight on this issue.
