A solution for other newbies having trouble activating child themes:

I followed Ian's instructions (also via WP Codex), and when I tried to activate the child theme from the WordPress dashboard, it stated the child was broken and missing the parent theme. (sad, really) The first thing to check is that in your CSS comment header you referenced the parent theme using only lowercase letters.

In my case, the issue was that Thematic originally installed to my directory in this folder: "thematic.0.9.7.7", which contained the "thematic" folder. So to get it to work, in the CSS header I had to reference the theme like this:

Theme: thematic.0.9.7.7/thematic

Hope this saves someone else the headache.

The "default.css" file shouldn't be touched at all. Any changes should only be made in the child theme's "style.css" file, leaving all of the Thematic files free to be upgraded with ease :)

You could copy over all of the default css and tinker from there perhaps?

Something that I don't understand or maybe I just missed the point is the fact that most of the modifications I made to Thematic so far were in default.css.

Now, if a child theme only contains style.css and functions.php, how is it possible that a child theme protects the themes/thematic directory from updates, as default.css lies withing this directory?

Sounds like it's a cache issue. I've had this happen to me while editing/designing. Whenever it happens I clear my browser cache, and if I need to, i clear my wordpress cache also. There are several plugins out there, I recommend either WordPress Super Cache or W3 Total Cache.

Hope this helps.

So is there a creating a child theme for dummies? I've done some html on blogger but that's the extent of my knowledge. When I want a new theme-I go to wordpress dashboard and click install....I have no idea how to create new files or anything like that or even where to start. Anyone want to help out a 45 year old. I just got in on the first generation macs in college but this is quite confusing.

Hi.. I recently changed theme from Boumatic to Thematic Feature Site. I know theyre both thematic templates but I love how the front page looks in the feature. I'm a bit new to php and all but I did some minor coding when I used Boumatic. I just like to know if its possible to edit feature-front-1.php directly and add one line of php code (example: php code of nivo slider) delete the other lines of code and set functions.php to
$rand = mt_rand(1);
?

I'm also curious if I can edit front-page.php directly to edit my content.

Thanks in advance! :)

So where do you guys/gals know about the proper hooks to remove? I want to remove the entire thematic_footer() so I can drop it in after thematic_after() hook but I can't find the proper doucmentation that says how to remove it. I found your notes here that say:

'thematic_footer','thematic_siteinfo',30

But where do you find that in the first place? I can't find that info on the http://themeshaper.com/thematic/guide/ page.

Hi Devin,

Thanks for the help. Your suggestion spurred me towards a different solution... which was actually staring me right in the face in your options functions. I wanted to be able to put in my own cred that couldn't be changed and yet still allow the rest of the footer text to be changed from the options.

function childtheme_footer($thm_footertext) {
    global $my_shortname;
	$footertext = '<span class="colophon">Theme by: [child-author]</span>' ;
	$footertext .= get_option($my_shortname . '_footertext');
    	return $footertext;
    }

add_filter('thematic_footertext', 'childtheme_footer');

You could just redo it entirely:

// Remove default Thematic actions

function remove_thematic_actions() {
	remove_action('thematic_footer','thematic_siteinfo',30);
}
add_action('init','remove_thematic_actions');

// Generate new footer code

function childtheme_siteinfo(){ ?>

	<p>My new stuff</p>

<?php }

add_action('thematic_footer', 'childtheme_siteinfo', 30);

Everything will then go inside #siteinfo.

This feels like a simple question, but it is evading me. How do I add a div in the footer.... on the same level of #siteinfo. what hook do i use? i saw there are:

add_action('thematic_footer', 'thematic_subsidiaries', 10);
add_action('thematic_footer', 'thematic_siteinfoopen', 20);
add_action('thematic_footer', 'thematic_siteinfo', 30);
add_action('thematic_footer', 'thematic_siteinfoclose', 40);

so i tried:
add_action('thematic_footer', 'thematic_siteinfoclose', 25);

The comment looks good. Do you have a functions.php file in your child theme... if not you need one. Try activating the default theme and the reactivating your child theme. Also the directory for the parent theme(Thematic) needs to be exactly what you have after the "Template:" part of the comment. Thematic's directory name should be thematic unless you've changed it to something else. If you have renamed it this could be the cause of your problem

here's how my child theme styles.css looks.
again, simply trying to change the hover color on the links as a test.
read thru some of the other forums so thought I had this correct but the hover color remains red.

new to thematic. novice coder. more right brain. trying to figure out child theme overrides and totally cutting my teeth:

http://themeshaper.com/wordpress-child-theme-basics/

I've customized the child theme, updated to the root theme directory, changed the child theme header. *CANNOT* figure out the 'Overriding Parent Theme Styles' - I've installed Firebug and am just trying to do a simple test - change the hover color on the page from the default #FF4B33 to #399588.

So where the tutorial says:
"Then just copy and paste the code into your Child Theme CSS where you can edit it safely"

WHERE am in the child theme style.css file do I copy it TO? I tried simply pasting:

a:active, a:hover {
color:#399588;
}

beneath:

/* Apply default theme styles and colors */
/* It's better to actually copy over default.css into this file (or link to a copy in your child theme) if you're going to do anything outrageous */
@import url('../thematic/library/styles/default.css');

what am I doing wrong?

Hi, a while ago I downloaded the feature theme. Now I wonder if it is possible to include an image below the menu bar on the blog page? (where there Moe is à text)

Also, is it possible to change the header of the feature theme?

How can I handle several users using the theme in a WPMU installation?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to add two
<div>
tags just after the
<body>
tag like so:

<div id="ombre-gauche">
<div id="ombre-droite">

...in order to recreate the shadow effect that we can find on http://www.mbdragan.com/ web site, which is pretty cool by the way.

All this with the function.php file. And I just cannot figure out how to add those div with a function.

Any idea?

Thanks in advance.
