Hi Helga,

yeah I worked on the css file to clean up the 3c commune theme. In the meantime I changed to the somewhat stripped samplechildtheme though because the website owner is going to provide all the raw material of which to build the design on from scratch. Thanks for your answer!

what's messy about it? it looks fine w/ the exception of the search widget jutting out which can be fixed with

#s {
max-width: 100%;
}

Thanks Jagst3r15 for your quick answer. I did just that and it works ok. I made the changes in the style.css file which I hope is the right way to do it. I do find it kinda strange though because the developer did include extra css-files in the layout subfolder just for this purpose.

I think the site is built for a two column layout so you might be out of luck unless you want to style the 3 column layout yourself

Hi everyone,

great to have joined the thematic community!

I've just installed Thematic and the Commune child theme. After importing a basic style through:

@import url('../thematic/library/layouts/3c-fixed.css');

the lay-out looked rather messed up: http://ojas.kamst.com/

Any suggestions on how to fix that? I am sure that it was not meant that way (or was it?)

Thanks in advance
Marcel

why don't you show us what you have tried. the first step is getting the markup in the right place. then you can style it.

How to add adsense beside my header (align right)? I know I have to add some code in function.php and CSS to place correctly. But can anyone help me to create the code? I have tried to put the code in themetic header.php but it appears at the center and distort my title.

I am not 100% familiar with javascript, but I do know that in order to get wordpress to recognize the jquery $ function you have to massage it a bit.

Adding

jQuery.noConflict();
jQuery(document).ready(function($) { //tells WP to recognize the $ variable

before the code you add to head might to the trick.

I'm working on a site with a feature slider using the JQuery code in http://webdeveloperplus.com/jquery/featured-content-slider-using-jquery-ui/ All the elements seem to be working OK except that the script isn't being initialised. I'm not sure what I have done wrong so if anyone can give any ideas they would be gratefully received.

The code in my functions.php is as follows

//jQuery
function my_init() {

The final function is called from the home.php file in my child theme. If I take the generated html and put it in a file with the scripting manually added it all works fine, just doesn't work when in the theme.

Thanks for the code fix suggestion. It would be nice to mess with the code and get a little more art going on in your content slider. I have just manipulated the code with a lot of plugins, and its easy to really get it customized. guess and check!

I wanted a content slider that would automatically pull the first image from a post for display, along with the excerpt. I love the WP Featured Content slider, but my users always complained about having to add images to a custom field (lazy), so, I set out to make my own slider that would do everything for them.

My biggest issue was in pulling that first image out of posts for use on the slider, so i sorta copped out and used Justin Tadlock's "get_the_image" plugin. Worked swell.

I used the coda slider as the actual slider.

I used theme options to dictate what category and quantity of posts to display.

Here's the code i used for the actual slider, its only the portion that is actually in the page template, it doesn't account for the css/javascript additons to make it work, but this, to me, was the hardest part, and should show one method of pulling post data and having it dynamically display using coda.

<div class="coda-slider-wrapper">
	<div class="coda-slider preload" id="coda-slider-1">
		<?php

			$pocount = get_option('shabadoo_theme_options');
                  $featurePosts = new WP_Query();
                  $featurePosts->query('category_name='.$pocount['slidecat'].'&showposts='.$pocount['postcount'].'');
              ?>

        <?php while ($featurePosts->have_posts()) : $featurePosts->the_post(); ?>
        <div class="panel">
			<div class="panel-wrapper">
<!-- add the resized post image -->
             <div class="feature_post_pic">
<?php get_the_image( array( 'image_scan' => true,'default_size' => 'large', 'width' => '363', 'height' => '242'

You'd probably be best off doing the tutorial and creating your own, but I use the "WP Featured Content Slider" by IWEBIX, Dennis Nissle, which does the trick pretty well.

Found the fix for the "wp-featured-content-slider" plugin problem. It is in the actual js file that unpacks with the plugin.

In the slider.js file:
replaced the $(..)-function by jQuery(..) for both lines, 57 and 58.

The fix is listed in the comments below the post here: http://www.iwebix.de/featured-content-slider-wordpress-plugin/

Hope this helps

Hi all. I'm in the middle of trying to get this to work with a new site.

We have a development site here:

I have installed the plugin "wp-featured-content-slider"

My home page is a static page. I would like the slider to appear on the home page, just below the thematic navigation bar, and to slide through 3 or 4 posts in the category "featured technology."

I wrote a function into my child theme "functions.php" file, and it looks something like this:

<?php
function my_featured_slider () {
	if (is_page(3)) {//Checks to see if it's the "Welcome" Page
		include (ABSPATH . '/wp-content/plugins/wp-featured-content-slider/content-slider.php');
		} else {
		return;
	}
}
add_action('thematic_belowheader', 'my_featured_slider' );
?>

Still, I lose the content on my welcome page just below the slider, and it's not "sliding" between the featured posts. Any thoughts? Has anyone done anything similar?

Thanks!
Mandy

Ok Searching the ThemeShaper site I found Action Hooks and a mention of jQuery sliders:
http://themeshaper.com/action-hooks-wordpress-child-themes/

A great slider to use would be this one:
http://webdeveloperplus.com/jquery/featured-content-slider-using-jquery-ui/

The kicker will be pulling in the slider to use dynamically just a certain category like Showcase Sites.

Anybody that can add to my roadmap here, suggestions etc.?

Hi All, looking for some suggestions on adding a Feature Posts Slider, similar to Hybrid News use of a jQuery plugin. If this were a static html page, I'ld be right at home plugging in a jQuery slider of choice. New to wordpress I'm not sure what the best solution is?
Maybe ideally it would only show the excerpt and an image for each featured story.
What resource am I looking for a plugin, tutorial, something else?
I plan to use Thematic and redesign around the Commune theme since it's the only realy magazine style theme.

Oh Hi to all, I think this is my first post, you can follow me on twitter @Crssp.
I was one the first to read Ian's post that he's going to new job digs, congratulations again Ian. And also been trying to contact my long lost cousin Chris Gossmann my name is Ty Gossman, er well maybe we are cousins, ya never know.

The second pic caption is also solved, thanx to Cristi!!!!

Here is how it goes:

The first pic in Commune is ONLY uploaded and NOT inserted.

The second pic you hv to manually insert in the post, then switch to the html view and manually create a DIV around your image attributes. Here is an example :-

<div class="postimage"><img class="postimage" title="contribute" src="http://yoursitename.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/contribute.jpg" alt="woman" width="365" height="475" align="left" />

Cristian was generous enough to solve the hyperlinked captions issue!! I'm putting the solution here incase other people want to use this feature.

To add a hyperlinked text under your images on post pages, I'm putting Cristian's exact words-

" So to list your caption you need to add this (in index.php and single.php of the theme folder; in my case, Commune) before the closing </div> tag of the div
class thumb_150x150:

<?php $key="caption"; echo get_post_meta($post->ID, $key, true); ?>

After you add this, in the wordpress backend, on your post create a new custom

field with the name caption and inside it put the credits. "

Works like charm! Currently trying to find out how I can add hyperlinked captions below a second image and so on in the same post.

Thanks Chris for the quick response. I had found that discussion in the searches. But the problem is that the solution works by 'inserting' the image, while Cristian has configured Commune to work without inserting the 'image' - just uploading it with the post. And it recognises the image. Guess I'll hv to request Cristian to tweak it :)

thanks anyway!

Hi,

had a short look into the code. Cristian is using 'medium' to integrate the images (300 x 300 px by default).

For the hyperlinked caption: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/208122?replies=11

Im building up my new blog allhimalaya.com based on COmmune and loving the way its made much of my task so easy. But I'm having problems with my images.

First, in the post page, the image does not show up in full size ( example on this page - http://allhimalaya.com/2010/01/sundays-around-doon/ ) the actual photo is 375px x 500px but gets shown up rather smaller. How can i correct this?? in my editimage box while uploading the image, i have carefully checked that size is marked FULL.

Secondly, how can i add hyperlinked captions under the photos. Im using photos from flickr where i want to give credits to the actual owner. I've toyed with a couple of plugins (image caption easy, image caption) and adding hyperlinks in description also, but nothing works. Can anybody who has done this help out?

Nirvana! Thank you so much! It's beautiful!
Next stop for me is also having it appear in the right place for the category pages.. right now, it's not there at all, just pulls excerpts. I'm playing with it now, have added the alternative css you provided (without the .blog) but with paged .p1 into the "homepage unpaged" section and also in the general content section. No luck so far but I'm still at it. Thank you for your assistance and I totally understand if you have better things to do ;-) Have a great day!
