Hi All,

I know it has been sometime since this posting but I am currently having the same issues. Im using WP custom menus and everytime i click on a category while its loading it goes haywire. I have attempted the css change to 0 as mentioned above as well as the implemention of WP CSS but to no avail.

I would love to post a link but the site is currently local. It seems to work fine without the WP menu (gallery default) but it does not give the flexibility I need.

All help is appreciated!

Here is any relevant CSS:

Hi, I am completely new to wordpress and I am trying to use it as a CMS to create a prototype website.

I have currently created a child theme of the theme twenty ten and have added a number of pages and sub pages. When I add the sub pages they appear as drop down items on the main navigation.. is there anyway to turn the drop down off as I would prefer to have sub menu pages as a list down the left hand side of the page instead?

Thanks

well... though I solved it with:

header - z-index:9999; overflow:visible;

But I guess its something to do with Wordpress, because I have another child-theme working fine in 3.0.1 but in 3.0.3 I faced the same problem.

I found the problem but not the cause of the problem. The stylesheet is not cascading properly on the internal pages. The original style.css was overwriting the new child stylesheet but and giving the following values to

#access {
    position:relative;
    overflow:hidden;

It is bad form but until I figure out why it isn't cascading properly, I removed the access rule in the parent css.
Now it works fine with the following code

#access {
    border-bottom:none;
    height:32px;
    font-size:13px;
    overflow:visible;
    z-index:100;
}

Thanks for responding Helga.

It wasn't working when it was set to 3000. I had changed it to 99 when I copied some sample code trying to fix the issue. Just for giggles I switched it back to 3000 and it still isn't working.

I am really baffled.

i think it is in your newstyles.css

.sf-menu li:hover ul,
.sf-menu li.sfHover ul {
	left:			0;
	top: 2.5em; /* match top ul list item height */
	z-index:		99; /*3000; */
}

the z-index is too low... something else is higher. switch it back to the 3000 that was commented out and see what happens.

I have been struggling with the sub-menus staying hidden on all of my internal pages. I have read and re-read the excellent post on menus dymsytified but I am still stymied. I have swapped out the default css code from thematic into my child theme and it still doesn't work. If I switch the entire theme to Thematic my sub-menus do appear so I am thinking it is CSS or code outside of the .sf_menu styles that are causing my problem but I can't find it.

This is how it should work on all pages http://wineworldwarehouse.com/test/
This is an example of an internal page that does NOT work http://wineworldwarehouse.com/test/?page_id=55

My menu is not showing the submenus on some pages of my site http://wineworldwarehouse.com/test/?page_id=53.
In Firebug it is showing the sub-menu class as greyed out. It also shows display: none; visibility: hidden; But on other pages the ul sub-menu class is working properly.

I am scratching my head on this one. Suggestions?

It's been discussed here:

adding the constants to restore thematic dynamic classes resolves the thumbnail issue.

Also Chris Wallace over at up themes has rolled out an update to Gallery that addresses this:

Hey, I was working on a site yesterday and had an update for Thematic come through. I updated and when I went back to check my website, I noticed that the thumbnails in the blog section for the Gallery theme were all off. Instead of the rows and columns (about 5 or 6 to row) it is now one giant unaligned column.

I'm not really sure how to go about fixing this problem. Here is the website link so you can see what I'm talking about.

It's the combination of your stylesheet and the superfish javascript that is providing the code that hides the dropdowns in the navigation. It could be that there your site/hosting is choking on too many http requests and the source code is loading before the stylesheets and/or scripts are finished.

Here are some basic suggestions:
1. Have you tried clearing your browser cache and then reloading the page using the plugin listed above.
2. Can you provide a link to the site with the problem here. It'd be easier to diagnose/help you with a working example of the site.
3. Have you tried deactivating plugins one by one and seeing if that helps.

I'm having the same problem with the drop down menu on page load. Does anyone know a fix?

Moved from other thread:

Hi, I'm having a problem with the drop down menu when I load any page on my site.

When a page is loaded the drop down menu links show as messed up text below the nav bar for a short period of time before the page fully loads. Once the page is fully loaded the drop down menus are fine, with the child pages hidden until a user hovers over the parent page.

Is there a way to hide the drop down menus until they have fully loaded?

If anyone has any suggestions or if anyone's had any experience of a similar drop down menu loading error, then I would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

So as a follow-up to this, you can make the "null link" parent page direct to the first subsidiary page using the "Page Links To" plug-in. (As a usability guy, I'm not a fan of "null links" but that is off topic.)

I use a combination of plug-ins to basically handle anything that I would want menus to do:

1. Page Links To - http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/page-links-to/
This one allows you to create a page for the navigation, and have it point to anything: page, post, category, other site, etc. You still create the page as always, but the plug-in makes a permanent redirect so you don't need to put any content into the page that you make.

2. Page Menu Editor - http://www.stuffbysarah.net/wordpress-plugins/page-menu-editor/
This allows you to edit the text found in the navigation to something short like "About Us" but have the title of the page be "About XYZ Industries, Inc."

3. Exclude Pages from Navigation - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/exclude-pages/
This allows you to have pages that will not appear in the navigation, good for privacy, terms/conditions, etc.

Evening all,

Apologies if this has been covered, but as always its knowing how to phrase the question. I would like to create a 'placeholder' menu item on the drop-down menu. For example, if a parent page has children pages (so that a drop down menu appears), the parent page can easily be missed. I would like to make that parent a 'null link' so it doesn't actually link to anything, it just initiates the menu. I know its possible with a CMS like Joomla, can this be done with the thematic theme?

Hi Chris

Thanks for the WP CSS tip.
It seems to speed the site up a bit. Thank you.

Hi,

try WP CSS. This will copy all CSS files into one file. This might help solving this load time problem.

In addition I have some optimizations for the CSS files and the jQuery things on my to-do-list for one of the next versins of Thematic.

I'm using Chris Wallace's Gallery child theme for Thematic and noticed a weird bug in Safari (although Firefox and IE were fine).

If the mouse pointer is over the category menu when the page loads then the layout goes a bit haywire. I think the problem is caused by my long descriptions for subcategories: http://www.nativenoise.co.za

I found that changing the following CSS code fixed the problem:

#category-menu ul{
  padding: auto
}

I changed auto to 0 and it now works.

The whole page gets thrown out a bit while it's loading but it eventually settles. My server is really slow, so it's a pain to watch the site load weirdly before sorting itself out.
