Just saw this thread.

Justin Tadlock has some really good points about using child themes in this post: http://justintadlock.com/archives/2010/08/16/frameworks-parent-child-and-grandchild-themes

Otherwise, what Gene said is right on. Genesis is really doing well as a commercial theme framework selling child themes. I think we'll see more of that. Maybe even some commercial Thematic child themes.

my pennies worth,

i agree with @Jamie, you can achieve all with a child theme.

as for child themes on themeforest, perhaps its just the case that not many are on there to start with.

@krackpot, themeforest have confirmed that you can submit thematic child themes.

i'm unsure, that many of your average theme purchasers are unaware of whether its on a framework or not, if its looks good and has easy options, they'll buy.

i personally feel, promoting the fact that your 'child' theme sits on a framework is a big plus. a community behind a framework is better than a one-man-band behind theme updates.

@Daniel- I'm not sure ThemeForest alone gives a clear metric for the "future" of WordPress themes. Especially since it is a theme and web template marketplace with themes created by many different authors.

While Thematic and Hybrid seem to me to be the most active "free" frameworks, on the premium side there are: Woo themes' WooFramework and StudioPress' Genesis. I'm sure there are others. Besides child themes wouldn't function without plain old themes and any theme with the proper coding can provide a good foundation for a child theme.

Why re-invent the Wheel? If you'd prefer not to use a childtheme, you could try the Toolbox http://themeshaper.com/toolbox-html5-starter-theme/ Portfolio Press was built by Devin using this Toolbox. http://wptheming.com/2010/07/portfolio-theme/

oh sorry Daniel, regarding you last question, if you have the knowledge you can build just about any site you will ever need with childthemes, for clients or whoever.

here is one i did for a client, a "real world" example.

i think it's because a lot of people don't know how to do a child theme, you see when building a regular theme from scratch, you can build whatever you want the way you want, but when doing a child theme, you need to know how to modify the child theme in the way of hooks and filters in order to make it FIT to the theme design you want (sort of un-engineer it). i think for most people that is just a pain to try and do.

there is no attribution/rights that i know of, as thematic would not be sold with the child theme, the buyer would simply download thematic from the repository.

personally i think thematic and child themes ROCK! you won't catch me building a theme from scratch, that's like going backwards.

Hi Guys,

I am starting here and would like some input.

If you go to themeforest, you will see that the most downloaded or rated themes are stand alone. No one use child themes. If "child themes" are the future, when will the future arrive?

Please don't get wrong. I am not here to flame or create bad buzz. I am just trying to see real examples in "real world" . I have a small web development company and I am thinking in change our work flow here, to start to work 100% with child theme, but I am afraid that I will "lose" liberty in creating my websites.

Could someone please clarify my thoughts and last question. Is there any limitation in using child theme?

Regards,
Daniel
