Hummm...and since I'm very new to this wordpress stuff, what is considered a "template" here?

I started this as a regular site, then using Ian's instructions on the site, inserted the code into the proper places, applied CSS styles, and I have it looking good.

The menu doesn't seem to work either! In Dashboard, says this theme does not support custom menus...

Thanks for your help!

I would probably make them page "templates" and then assign 2 empty pages in the WP dashboard to use the custom templates. then they'll also be in your dash and easier to link to. but you can always use regular linking http://www.mysite.com/custom-page-1.html or whatever filetype it is.

Hi there guys, I've recently been asked to design a site but make it a Wordpress CMS....and thanks to the great instructions from Ian on this site it got me far...but not quite far enough....

I actually need to make this a hybrid site, two pages need to be controlled by the CMS, and 3 others can be (and kinda need to be because the format does not lend itself to blog format) regular HTML.

I can code the pages that don't need to be HTML as regualr...but how would I develop the links so they link to the wordpress pages then to the regular HTML pages?

I like the thematic design - I don't need a logo or redesign or anything like that. I just need the damn thing to work the way I want it to. I can worry about next year when time pressures ease off and budget increases.

I suppose the only thing that would need some work is the image-handling. For example, does thematic put a border or caption around images? I don't want any of that rubbish. But then that's just stripping off design rather than putting more on anyway.

Hi,

are you looking for someone who does the design and the functionality or is it just the functionality you're looking for?

I hear you on affording the time to learn. Hopefully you can find a reasonable solution that falls within your requirements. However it works out for you on this project, don't give up on WordPress and/or Thematic just yet. Things are always changing for the better around here.

Good luck- Gene

Thanks a lot Gene - that's very helpful.

Unfortunately that thread is far, far to advanced for me. I think I'll have to get some help on this, or even abandon wordpress altogether and look for something more WYSIWYG. I just can't afford the time for learning this right now - it's more complex than the projects I'm wanting to put online!

Maybe I'm being simple-minded about this, but I can't believe how difficult it still is to put together a functional website. It's years since I last tried and I sort of assumed my days of copying code into text editors were history.

Thanks again.

(Thematic 0.9.5.1 on WP 2.8.4)

Hi all,

I'm trying to build a blog-CMS hybrid and I could really use some help. Here's what I'm shooting for:

-HOME (static home page)

-PROJECTS (page listing projects on the site)
--Project A (static page featuring images and text)
--Project B (same again)
--Project C (looks like a blog - posts in 'projectc' category only.)
--Project D (same again)

-BLOG (looks like a blog, posts in the 'blog' category only)

-NEWS (looks like a blog, posts in the 'blog' category only)

Each of the blog-like sections should have their own RSS feeds. There should NOT be an over-arching RSS feed that slurps up every post on the site. I want that to be impossible.

I also want there to be posts that I can link to that the visitor can't place in the site structure - i.e. not in a category, no 'next' or 'previous' links. I'm not sure how to do this. Maybe a category with a specific template attached to it? I don't know. I'm using just the post-id as permalinks (e.g. website.com/39) because I want it to be very easy to link to posts, almost no typing required.

I'm a total beginner and I'm beginning to regret ever starting this site. Any help would be appreciated, including recommendations for someone I can pay to do this for me and an idea how much that might cost.

I'm still quite new to creating child themes, so please forgive me if this question is stupid.

I intended to have a front page with three columns: a sidebar, a gallery (of some portfolio works), and some blog posts on the right. The main blog and the portfolio will be on their own individual pages.

I tried creating a child theme for Thematic and then I copied index.php from the main theme and renamed it as frontpage.php, and then under the admin panel, created a new page with the new frontpage.php as the template. It didn't show up the posts.

Should I be trying conditional tags instead? I'm still trying to wrap my head around using conditional tags for the problem above.

Thanks in advance!
