yes helgatheviking that is the technique I am talking about but NOT for a background image for an entire page so that there is no scrolling.

yes krowchuk a type of elastic layout that is elastic in the height and width.

it doesn't matter as the client has agreed to a redesign that will not scroll...about 600px high.

Ah, I get it now, a variable width layout...

Assuming you're working with a child theme, just change the #main width to auto:

#main {
    width: auto;
}

Both #header and #footer are already variable width.

Gosh this might seem too obvious but you don't suppose the op is referring to an "elastic" layout as opposed to fixed static?

don't understand either. this is what I think of:
http://css-tricks.com/perfect-full-page-background-image/

why don't you show a link to what you mean?

No I'm not looking to resize thumbnails. I'm looking to resize a whole page (header, main, and footer div's)

If it's the effect I think you're speaking of, there's a PHP script called TimThumb that has been used a lot in WordPress appparently...

I've seen this done in a few different places where the background image resizes to fit the window...I'm wondering if there is a way for this to work for the entire page of a portfolio site so the header, main and footer divs always fit the page...hope that makes sense.

Obviously there would need to be a minimum height, but what I need is for the height to fit the users window size so there is no scrolling...

Let me be clear the site I'm creating won't have a background image, but that is the only way I have seen it done so far.

I have tried playing with %'s for each div's height, but am not having any luck so I open to any suggestions
