Problem Solved - here's what I did in order to cover the need:

1. Use a word counter tool to define exactly how long I wanted the excerpt to be.
2. Installed the Advanced Excerpt plugin.
3. In the Advanced Excerpt settings, I added my exact excerpt length, and left the Ellipsis and 'Read-more' Text fields BLANK.
4. Check the "don't remove any markup" box (which I needed to do in order to keep the photo I have in the post)

Done. This allows the Thematic Feature Site to use the custom excerpt I wanted. Since I show full length posts (and they're not very long) on the Blog page, this didn't cause any problems.

So - this works - for me, in this case, on this site. If you have a more appropriate way of managing this, please don't hesitate to share.

Thx

Working with Feature Site. The "About" section in the lower left of home page doesn't seem to want to truncate. I've tried what I can think of ... any insight much appreciated.
