Greetings Guys,

I've been using thematic for some time now, and would now like to develop a child theme with a rather unique home page layout similar to http://www.pagelines.com/demos/iblogpro/ but with some slight changes.

- on the home page, my intention is to have a full width carousel in the 'leader' area [the area just under the menu] that pics the post images, title, and excerpt from a particular posts-category. This should only be visible on the home page.

- just under the home page, have the area divided into three columns [just as it is on the above URL], with each column being as follows: Category Title - line break, Category Image - line break, Category description - line break, followed by a thumbnail-title combo to three most recent articles in the same category. There will be two rows of these [I'm using 6 categories in my site.

Any which filters should I apply to my child theme's functions.php?

My knowledge in CSS and PHP coding is rather limited, though I would like to learn by doing, so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
