Best header and side bar image sizes

I am very new to this blog design malarky but I've created a Thematic Child Theme so we'll see how I go.

My first task is to add a header image (which I know is dealt with elsewhere) but I was wondering if someone could tell me what width image seems to work best with Thematic?

Also planning some big square buttons in the sidebar which I'll add as HTML in a text box. Any suggestions for width there too?

Apologies if these have been mentioned somewhere else. Just thought it would save me some time rather than forever resizing to fit.

I like a 250-300px high header, but I'm fond of images. I think if it was simply text, you could go smaller :)The width of the big buttons in your sidebar would depend on what layout you're using. (I use 250's and 125's)
