Customizing thematic framework?

    Ok so I had some general questions for everyone! Im trying to build a very custom theme for a client. I started off by using thematic as my framework and bult upon it using child themes. So here are my questions!

    1) How many of you that have built a child theme and have had to edit more than just the function.php and style.css? What I mean has there been something that u couldn't have done with CSS, Filters, or Hooks?

    2) How many people used thematic and edit it directly versus child theme?

    3) Lastly Having any of you built / customized your own framework based off of thematic?

    Hi @ductiletoaster, I've built a couple of things including my personal website, all as Thematic Child themes and there was not a single thing that I couldn't do through CSS, custom functions on the child-theme and javascript.

    You shouldn't touch the theme files, if there is something you can't change, ask in the forums, people are super helpful.

    If there is something you can't possibly change, the developing team may consider introducing a change to the core if your needs may be the same as other people...

    I've been able to achieve almost everything so far with css and functions. This has included magazine style layouts / portfolio layouts. Hurdles can arise when you are dealing with certain custom mods.
    If needed you can always introduce some page templates.
    I love Thematic!

    Thanks for the reply! Im a kinda neat freak when it comes to my code so i tend to dislike using methods that aren't exactly clean. For instance if our php script made code something like

    [CODE]
    <div id="content">
    <div id="main">
    <p>woot</p>
    </div>
    </div>
    [/CODE]

    but i wanted the <p> to be content to move outside the main div. Some people would just use positioning in CSS. When you could just go into the script and move the portion that generates the paragraph..... basically i like to reduce the amount of code i need!

    And there have been a couple times where i have needed to move some code because of this reason. Now I LOVE how modular thematic is... meaning that it uses hooks and filters to do most of its work however i have noticed in some of the template files this is not completely the case. That is why i wanted to see if anyone had customized thematic framework themselves and started to develop there own framework

    I guess what im say is i could place a request for a change but that takes time and i have been thinking more and more about instead just taking thematic and customizing it into my own framework.

    Tough the downside to this is that u would then have to maintain it for your own needs.
    and that's a LOT of code to maintain

    Hi,

    if you need something special, just ask :)

    Let me give you an example. Two new functions in the upcoming Thematic version, were requested by a designer. These new functions allow to move the header and / or the footer out of the #wrapper.

    This is one example what can be done with Thematic without touching the original code:

    I did build a child theme I use with most sites: http://wptheming.com/2009/10/thematic-theme-options-panel/ (I start with this base, and then skin the site on top of it). After you've done a number of projects with Thematic, you have a pretty set of filters and functions you can reuse.

    However, I have had projects that had such a different layout structure than Thematic, that it made way more sense to built it from scratch.
