display an empty vertical space before header

Hi (I am a beginner!)

I managed to display Thematic menu above header using a hook in functions.php of the child theme.

Now I'd like to leave an empty vertical space above the menu, I guess I have to use thematic_before, but I don't know how.
Can you help me?

try adding padding (or margin) to the top of the access div in style.css in your child theme.

I added
margin-top:20px;
for the #access id (as I put the access above branding) and it works.
