What I am trying to achieve is to have the header image as shown on this page, but have the sidebar display right of the content, so I have one wide header and underneath it, a two column layout... Here you can view the page:

thematic is by default a 2 column layout... as long as in your stylesheet you are importing the proper stylesheet from the thematic layouts library.
if you want to add a full-width div above the content.. you might try a variation of what i just posted somewhere else:
