Hi everybody,
Because I made a child theme I now have seemingly have two sets of PHP pages to edit.
What am I supposed to edit/upload etc.? That is what's good structural form? I built the child theme, but I'm not exactly sure which portion of the main Thematic theme I am preserving.

You want to preserve ALL of Thematic and leave it intact in its own directory. Then, you want to put your child theme in its own directory. Both should be uploaded via FTP to your Themes directory.

I recommend you read a couple of the tutorials with screenshots on creating a Thematic child theme, then have a look at one of the videos referenced there too. That's what I did when first learning, and it helped to see the actual process.

you should only have your child theme files to edit. you don't touch thematic files except for upgrading them to newer versions from time to time.

Okay, I think I've managed to screw that up. Nothing too big though. Just some extra tags that shouldn't be in the main PHP tree.
What odd though is that this has happened by using WP's theme editor. When I select the child theme it updates the parent Thematic PHP documents. Is that a no-no for child themes?
I'm only supposed to have one set of PHP files all in the parent folder, right? I then access this structure using functions.php. Should I just try to re-organize my files as such?
This thematicmondo.com is great. Really good cut and dry tutorials all in one direction. This is probably the best Thematic/WP site I've seen yet next to this one. It's late, but I'll definitely have to check it out tomorrow.

i think that might be one of the downfalls of child themes... their files don't appear in the WP editor. however, i almost never edit themes this way. it is so much easier to work in Notepad++ (or your editor of choice) with syntax highlighting. plus you'd better be sure you have FTP access for when you forget a ; and you get the white screen of death.
leave thematic as is.
in your child theme you will have at the barest minimum a style.css and most likely a functions.php.

Cool, yeah. Actually the "editor" is really not...what one would...use because it doesn't undo. For the most part I use Komodo Edit and Transmit for all my editing. You're right yeah, colors (and TAB) are so necessary. That and Firebug–Best Firefox add-on EVER.
Cool, I'll just stay away from direct page editing and try to use hooks as much as possible.
That tutorial pretty much sums up what I got from the Thematic child-theme explanation. I think you might've sent me that one too. :) Not sure, but this one definitely has really nice simple PHP samples. Those are kind of hard to come by. You don't need to build forms, but just having a feel for the PHP syntax is quite a milestone.
I need to jot down a short list of like...insert text, insert image, etc. functions. I'm guessing that's what lot of people do so they don't get tripped up by commas etc.
