I see a space below the #header and above #main
But how can I define that space in the CSS on my own site.
I mean the space between header and main section. I am not abble to find it in the CSS

i am not sure i follow your question. by default, the hook, thematic_belowheader, is empty... so unless you hook a function onto it, you will not have anything show up in your theme... and thus, nothing to control w/ CSS.
the space between the header and the main divs is controlled by padding on the main div. right now yours is
#main{
padding:66px 0 22px;
}
to reduce this space you'd lower the 66
please visit getfirebug.com and add that to firefox. trust me, it will help a lot with questions like this.

There is another thing I need to learn understand and that is when to edit the child-theme CSS and when to edit the default CSS...
Does any-one have a link that explains how to understand the original/child them relation?

here is a really great tutorial on child themes:

there are plenty of really great snippets here, at wptheming.com , and a bunch of other places once you understand the concept. never edit the files in the thematic folder. only edit CSS in your child theme's style.css (or later you can split the css and do more imports). basically whatever you define in YOUR theme will take precedence over anything from thematic. anything you do not define will use the thematic defaults. make sense? read the tut, it should help. i think Ian wrote some good ones for themeshaper too.
