how to limit the number of posts on index page

I want to limit the number posts on the home page to 3 or 4 with excerpts and not full content and all of them as stickies also. How can i have that ? any guidance will be much appreciated.

i have downloaded the different posts per page plugin and the number restriction is okay. how can i show the excerpts only and make them stickies on home page
