Hi there,
I would like to place a search widget next to thematic's navigation, which I think would need to be in the #access div, but there is no action hooks in this area to make use of apart from underneath or over the navigation. What would be the best way to insert a widget here? Please see a pic of what I mean here (the green area is where I would like to add the search function)

there are no hooks in #access, but it is on priority 9, you could put your widget on priority 10 and float them next to each other.

Would you please expand on adding the widget on priority 10 and moving it next to access? I successfully made a new widget area as per Chris' code on 'the new thematic way' link, but after messing with the code and trying to make my own widget area (floated next to access as you suggest), I am having trouble understanding how the widget gets positioned within the flow. The priority thing is new to me, and this is my first theme; I am having trouble getting my head around it!
priority is just like a traffic cop. you can add a 100 functions to the same hook and WP will just run them all as it finds them unless you get out your orange flag and tell them there to go.
i did forget the CSS for #access is full width... it is the div class="menu" inside of it that limits the menu to 960px wide and then floats it in the middle.
before i launch into the different ways to achieve this why don't you see if this won't do what you need?
