I wanted to remove the blogroll and meta widgets from my secondary aside, but it looks like they're hard-coded. Is this the case, and is there a reason for it? It seems like you would want that to be controllable through WordPress.
I can easily work around this by not displaying those widgets through CSS, but I'm curious if there's logic behind this that I'm missing.
The default widgets can be replaced by adding new widgets in the admin panel.
So they were there because I hadn't added any widgets to Secondary? And if I did they would go away?
Yep. It's the same thing I'm doing on ThemeShaper.

I desire no widgets in the secondary aside.
The default widgets appear unless another widget(s) is specified.
If I have to choose a widget in order to override and remove the defaults I am left with an unwanted widget just for the purpose of disabling the default widgets.
How is that solved?

I was thinking the exact same thing today. I might remove widgets entirely from the secondary aside.
In the meantime …
#secondary {display:none;} in your child theme or copy sidebar.php into your child theme and delete the widgets there that you don't want showing up.
Oh!!! So the primary aside and secondary aside are stacked on top of each other, but the default set of widgets will load into the secondary aside until something, anything, is loaded in there explicitly?
See, I'm new to this stuff, but figured out the default WP theme's situation similar to this one in a minute or two, but Thematic took a bit longer to figure out: load one widget into secondary aside and no further changes are required.
Yeah, I'd have to say I'd expect them to be in the primary aside ... but does secondary aside map onto "sidebar" if you flip themes around?
