I know there are plenty of topics about this on this forum, and believe me, I've read and tried them all. I'm wondering how I can customize the default menu (I believe it's #access or sf-menu). I cannot seem to remove the box around the links. And there is always a background color. I've been able to strip the box down to white, but I cannot remove it completely. I just want to have a navigation made up of simple black text with a red hover state (just the text). I cannot think this isn't possible...

Copy the CSS from Point Number 6 'Styling the Beast' from this post http://themeshaper.com/forums/topic/thematic-menus-demystified-1 and you'll see that it's all been colour coded to help find what you're looking for

also, investigate with getfirebug.com the border and the white background are weirdly (imo) placed on the surrounding LI element instead of the A element. something i did away with when 'styling the beast'
