Thematic Feature Site: background colour

I've searched around the forums & haven't found anything to help, so here goes (total newbie here :P)

I just bought the Thematic Feature Site theme & was wondering how to change the background colour/image of the 3 different sections on the front page (specifically the header at the top & the third "sub-feature" section). I've fiddled around with the background colours but have only managed to change either the entire page to one colour, or the backgrounds of the actual containers - not the background of each section.

(Basically I'd like to try something similar to the Themeshaper homepage - with distinctive "sections")

edit: I've managed to change the header's background colour, but I'm still struggling with "sub feature" section

i changed the header & featured posts background colours, and changed the main background colour of just the home page (thus allowing for the "sub-feature" to have its own colour) - but i would prefer to use a less round-about way... any ideas?

I'm also new to CSS etc and I too would appreciate a very brief guide to changing the background colours etc. or perhaps someone could provide a link to a suitable website to get me started. Cheers.
