Too many comments - not enough background image

My blog will be only one post per page. What I didn't think about when I designed it was that if someone is viewing a post and there are multiple comments, my background image (in the body css tag) ends and all the comments just sit on a brown background color. Ugly! (Ignore other ugliness - I'm still working many, many kinks out of my first WordPress theme!)

So...what's the best way to add at least some "paper" as the page gets longer and longer? I'd love to put a "cap" on the end of whenever the comments end, but that seems like a lot to ask of my limited WordPress and php abilities (I'm pretty good with HTML and CSS), but at least a repeated paper background with brown right/left edges that ends when the page ends would be better than what's happening now.

I tried adding a repeating background image to the footer and the siteinfo css tags, but that doesn't seem to be working, so I'm hoping someone can help me out. Thanks!

create a "tile" of paper and repeat it vertically on #main

Hmmm...don't know if it's my code or what, but my page looks the same when I add it to #main.

Unfortunately that covers up the left side of my background image, which makes sense now since the the background image is in the body tag and #main is on top of that.

true. maybe you should put the tile on the body background and then progressively layer over it. (you'd need a top and bottom)

Which divs might I put those two pieces into? Or do I need to create new divs? (Sorry - this is my first attempt at designing a Wordpress theme and I know I'm being a pain the butt!)

ETA: I guess I'm wondering why a footer that could stretch as far down as the comments reached, with a repeat-y background image wouldn't work. That seems a lot simpler than cutting my background image in two and trying to match it up into two divs, but maybe it's easier than it sounds. :)
