Does anyone else out there have the same problem when trying to upgrade on a local MAMP install WP asks for FTP Connection information (Hostname FTP Username and FTP Password) How can I find out what the FTP Username and Password is, or how to bypass it.
I tried editing the class-ftp.php file as per here: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/automatic-plugin-updates-not-working-with-xampp-on-osx-needs-ftp-login?replies=21 but that didn't work for me.

MAMP/MAMP Pro is a great development platform (I use MAMP Pro myself), but I think support for them may be a bit outside the charter of the Thematic community. Is there a charter?
Not trying to pick on you @lastraw, or anybody, but is there any plans or thoughts given to the possibly of creating a new forum which may be a little more directed or sub-divided? You know...like "Thematic Function Mods ", "Thematic Styling Mods", "Thematic T-Shirts", "Thematic Political Action Committee" etc. OK, maybe not the last one.

I don't use MAMP but I have set up a lot of Mac localhost dev environments using Apache MySQL PHP and named for wildcard virtual hosts.
You'll need enable FTP on your mac.
I'm pretty sure that for Tiger Leopard and Snow Leopard you simply need to enable ftp via the System Prefs > Sharing. You'll need to check the File Sharing box, choose or create the correct user to give FTP access, and click the "Options" button and check the FTP check box.
In Lion you still need to check File Sharing in the Sharing System Preferences *but* Apple discontinued FTP config via the "Options" button. You'll need to activate FTP using terminal or via a third party GUI tool. Googling FTP + Lion will give you a plethora of results that can help to explain this.

Oh yeah, then when you go to upgrade WordPress enter localhost for the Hostname and then the user name and password for the user that has been given file sharing privs in the Sys Prefs > Sharing >File Sharing section.
If you've done all that correctly and it still fails you may have to set proper ownership and/or file permissions.

Usually the problem with installing plugins or doing updates to a Wordpress install on MAMP or MAMP Pro is a permissions issue on the local server running as www instead of local user. Permissions set by file sharing prefs won't make any difference because it doesn't know www. First, try changing who is running the server (user). You can always change it back. You can also try writing define(‘FS_METHOD’,'direct’); to wp-config.php although I have never tried that. Good luck.
Yes permissions and ownership is the key. It sounds like fwunder is more experienced w/the MAMP app. You should follow his advice over mine.
My method definitely requires that you chown the user to the user you set in in sys prefs > sharing and the group to _www and then chmod 775.
Thanks for the responses. It looks like a bigger time investment than I can spend on this, so I'm going to keep my local sites on a machine running an older version of OS X with MAMP until it gets easier to deal with, which after all is why I'm using MAMP in the first place. Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 is what we're running that doesn't work.

@lastraw, if it's worth the $ investment, MAMP Pro 2.0.5 has worked flawlessly for me right out of the box running Lion 10.7.3 an (currently) 10 hosts. Used with Duplicator plugin, makes development/migration/updates a pleasure.
