MaízyMás

MaízyMás is a theme inspired by the sacred origins of corn and the vibrant culture of Mexican street food. This design displays the local myths, food, and culture, using native maize as a metaphor for both memory and modularity.

About the design

A theme made of stories: The site opens with a phrase drawn from the Popol Vuh, a Mesoamerican origin myth in which humans were created not from clay or wood but from corn. The concept threads through every section and design element — from geometric dividers to iconography — reflecting a folkloric spirit and purposeful reuse across templates.

Visual styles and typography

I chose to pair bold, blocky headline typefaces with a simple geometric sans for body text. The contrast supports both folk motifs and modern editorial rhythm. The theme also includes four style variations, each named after elements of Mexican street culture and traditions around maize: MilpaAzulTierra, and Nixtamal.
