  • AboutIn a nutshell, we’re a bunch of people who really care about WordPress themes and want to see them get better and better — on WordPress.com and every self-hosted WordPress site. This is our blog. We are Ian Stewart, Lance Willett, and Matías Ventura. First formed in early 2010 at Automattic, we develop themes for the millions of users on the popular blogging service WordPress.com. While improving themes from the community as well as crafting our own we work hard to ensure our improvements make it back to the open source community. We want everyone to feel a sense of momentum and ever-increasing possibilities, and to do so we will present as many perfect-fit WordPress themes to as many WordPress.com users as we can. We will ensure all of our public work represents the best in coding practices, web standards, and technical excellence. We will craft all of our themes to have consistent user experience and meet our users expectations and hopes. We will teach…

Version control is a key part of a successful software project, and we use Subversion heavily at Automattic. All our themes, side projects, and even PSD files go into SVN repositories. We often talk to theme designers that are getting into more advanced theme development who need a quick crash course on using Subversion. As…

    in CSS Tips, Theme Development

In our themes on WordPress.com we often hide text from screen display but still want it to remain for screen readers. Typical techniques like text-indent and absolute positioning work fine until you try to add RTL support to the theme. After adding RTL styles those techniques cause layout issues; most commonly a huge horizontal scrollbar…

A lot of people have been asking where the name for the Duster theme came from. I love naming themes (it’s probably something that warrants a post of it’s own in the future) so I’m glad to share the backstory. We started work on Duster during a team meetup in Arizona — notorious land of…

It’s kind of appropriate this is my first post here on Themeshaper, given I first kicked off discussion of a WordPress.com theme marketplace four years ago.
