  • AboutIn a nutshell, we’re a bunch of people who really care about WordPress themes and want to see them get better and better — on WordPress.com and every self-hosted WordPress site. This is our blog. We are Ian Stewart, Lance Willett, and Matías Ventura. First formed in early 2010 at Automattic, we develop themes for the millions of users on the popular blogging service WordPress.com. While improving themes from the community as well as crafting our own we work hard to ensure our improvements make it back to the open source community. Our Goals Every WordPress.com user should feel like there’s a theme that fits them perfectly, that is exactly how they want to present themselves to the world, that they’re excited to show to their friends. We want everyone to feel a sense of momentum and ever-increasing possibilities, and to do so we will present as many perfect-fit WordPress themes to as many WordPress.com users as we can. We will ensure all of our public work represents the best in coding practices, web standards, and technical excellence. We will craft all of our themes to have consistent user experience and meet our users expectations and hopes. We will teach…

When we think of space flight, we often think of the thing that gets us there: the shuttle, module or rockets that take us out of this world. However, in the early days of space flight programs at NASA, one man realized how important control from the ground would be to quickly evolving missions. Christopher…

On WordPress.com, one thing we’ve been focusing on is making themes that just work. It’s a bit of a balancing act; it’s very tempting to allow customers to control every aspect of their theme, because it seems like the simplest way to give them what they want. That idea may sound great to customers, but…

Every few months I read a post about how the WordPress theme business has shrunk. The authors always reach a similar conclusion. Sales have dwindled. Competition has increased. Putting food on the table, finding a niche and standing out is near impossible. It may not be so impossible though. With a new editing interface on…

Underscores, our popular starter theme for WordPress theme development, isn’t going anywhere. As we continue to push for consistency in themes and imagine what they might become with Gutenberg, we’re bringing our attention back to Underscores. 🚀 For the last year and a half, we’ve…
